In the morass of published drivel, how do you choose books worth your time?
Nassau Street Books offers connoisseur-quality reads that intrigue and inform, prompting discovery of new realms and a redefining of what’s possible.
Why Nassau Street Books
THEN: Nassau Street was the epicenter of Publisher Row in 1840s NYC, an era of forward-thinking literature and sociopolitical change sparked by writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman. Gowan’s Antiquarian Bookstore was their drop-by for stimulating conversation and occasional mud-slinging when they disagreed.
Newspaper offices for The Sun, Broadway Journal, Sunday Times and Weekly Newspaper, Evening Mirror and The Weekly Mirror, and many others lined Nassau Street. Moonlighting writers scribbled late into the night to supplement their small incomes ($20 a poem or article). Some became famous overnight, like Poe with his “The Raven.”
NOW: Just as Nassau Street was the epicenter of groundbreaking news and transformative ideas in the 1840s, Nassau Street Books aspires to be the epicenter of today’s innovative influencers.
The 10-story Morse Building, built in 1879 at 140 Nassau Street, was one of NYC’s tallest buildings. Nassau Street intersects with Beekman, Fulton, Liberty, Wall, and Broad.
